With a little over a month left before all my shows finally come back, I’ve been occupying my time by watching online documentaries. These are mostly commercial free versions of documentaries shown on the various channels which broadcast this type of content.
Here is a list of the some of the sites that I often use to find online documentaries.
One of the biggest listing of documentaries to watch. This site acts as more of an index than a host of the videos, cataloging documentaries from Anthropology, Business, Politics, Health, Science and more. Most of the sources are from Google video.
A very popular PBS series is now available online. Allows you to use either Quicktime or Windows Media Player. I recommend The Mormons and News War though the others are equally as good.
This is probably the biggest listing out of all of the sites I have listed here. I did have a few problems with some videos, but overall they seem to work pretty well. This site also has a large database on TV shows.
UPDATE: Recently (end of October) the owner of this site was arrested and it was taken down. He never hosted anything, just was a large index. Sad. Most of the documentaries were simply found on Google Video.
While not so much of a source of documentaries, what you will find are hundreds of videos that bring you “the world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes).” People from Will Wright to Al Gore all have spoken here.
You can also just use Google Video to find you documentaries.
- BBC Documentary - This will find you a variety of BBC documentaries, though at times it can be frustrating when you can’t find the next part of the video.
- BBC Horizon - Science focused documentaries.
- Charlie Rose - Probably some of the best interviews you’ll ever watch. Nothing fancy, just the straight questions.
- Documentary Duration:Long - This will have Google Video search for any video with the keyboard documentary with the duration long, to weed out some of the shorter documentaries.
- PBS Nova - One of my favorite series, you can find a good selection of them on Google Video.
Other Sources:
- “Best” of Google Video - The author has gone through Google Video’s catalog of interesting videos (mainly educational shows and/or documentaries) so you don’t have to.
- Guerillartivism.net - Another of individual documentaries.
- ThrowawayyourTV’s del.ico.us List - Another big list of individual documentaries.
